A building which was a part of the German Prisoner of War Camp during World War II, burned Saturday morning.
The old barracks, which once housed German POWs, was unoccupied and was being used as a storage facility at Mexia State School.
Sadly, the building housed the annual Tour of Lights Christmas decorations, which will have to be replaced, a state school official stated. Those decorations could not be salvaged.
The alarm went out about 1:30, sending Tehuacana, Groesbeck and Mexia State School fire-fighting units to the on-campus scene. Mexia Fire Department also responded, with its ladder truck, and an engine unit. “We left the scene around 6 o’clock Saturday morning,” Mexia Fire Chief Clayton Shivers told The Mexia News.
Mexia firefighters had also responded to another fire at the state school, Friday. It was to another building where a barrel of mopheads had ignited. That fire was quickly resolved.
The State Fire Marshals Office is investigating the old barracks fire.
