Mexia schools will remain open - for now - and will remain so unless unforeseen circumstances arise.
Surfacing at the news conference Friday morning were news tidbits relating to the swine flu epidemic, which fortunately has yet to make its way to Mexia and into the immediate area.
Earlier in the day, Superintendent Albert Armer told The Mexia News he had sent letters to parents of students, apprising them that there would be no more travel involving Wortham Independent School District, pertaining to student trips, performances, competition, etc. This is effective until May 11, unless other problems arise relating to the swine flu.
Superintendent Dr. Harold Ramm was unable to attend the teleconference, but standing in for the Groesbeck Independent School District, for questions and statements, was Carolyn Golden, assistant Superintendent. She said, “We are complying with all directives, which are in force until May 11,” at the earliest. Compliance with UIL regulations is also in effect. All University Interscholastic League events were cancelled this week...until May 11. The same compliance was announced by Wortham and Mexia Independent School District.
Superintendent Dr. Jason Ceyanes of Mexia has made sure parents have adequate contact about schools and their students, in view of the swine flu, which has hit several states. “In Mexia we are trying to not over-react,” he told fellow teleconference participants. “We don’t want anyone to panic, and their are no plans for our schools’ shutdown...at the present time.”
