Mexia students break windows of rival's bus

Mexia’s basketball games against Madisonville Tuesday were tarnished by criminal mischief on the part of several Mexia students.
While the game was going on in the Mexia High School gym, several Mexia youths broke three windows in a Madisonville bus.
The incident occurred between 5:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. while the buses were parked on Mexia ISD property, and no one was inside.
Witnesses reported the incident to the Mexia ISD Police, and five high school boys were located and disciplined.
The windows were broken out by rocks, according to Mexia ISD Superintendent John Turpin.

Mexia’s Gerald Hen­der­son recently regaled the Me­xia Lions Club with the story of his trip to the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame, in Carthage. He used the venue to speak of his admiration for Cindy Walker, a prolific songwriter associated with Mexia.
Walker was born July 20, 1918, in Mart, but lived in Mexia for many years and died here March 23, 2006.

Unemployment not so bad in Limestone County

The nation's unemployment rate may be high, but Limestone County's unemployment rate is much better.
According to a report by Heart of Texas Unemployment Insurance dated Jan. 6, 2012, the average unemployment rate nationwide was 8.5 percent in December 2011, 8.7 percent in November.
The state with the highest unemployment in November was Nevada, with 13 percent, while North Dakota had the lowest unemployment at 3.4 percent.
Texas' unemployment rate was 8 percent for December and 8.2 percent for the year.
By comparison, unemployment in Limestone County was 6.7 percent in December, and 6.8 percent for the year.

MISD race called, unaffected by federal suits

Mexia ISD formally called for a May election to fill two board spots, a race not affected by ongoing legal wrangling involving state redistricting.
The board at its Jan. 23 regular monthly meeting approved calling a May 12 election to fill the spots currently held by board President Richard Duncan, in Position 6, and  and Position 7, held by Willie Herring.
Trustees also agreed to contract with the Limestone County Clerk's office to hold the election for the district. That office owns accessible voting machines now required by federal law and rents them to various taxing entities during elections.   More

Mexia power hiccups

The power outage that hit all of Mexia for a brief period Thursday night was caused by a glitch on a line far from town.
Pat Wilson is the area manager for Oncor,  in Corsicana, which provides the power lines and infrastructure in the area.
“Apparently what we saw was a transmission trip,” she said. “Storms in that area caused the line to trip.”
The event occurred a 6:52 p.m. on a transmission line 10.5 miles outside of Mexia in the direction of Jewett.

Mexia Speech and De­bate opened the UIL district academic competition with cross examination (CX) de­bate at Fair­field. 
Sweeping the tournament: Team Jeffrey Hensel and Keegan Huff  placed first, Team Hennah Patel and Ivan Marez placed second and freshman team Rachael Lorenzo and Ricky Reyes placed thirrd.
Not only did the team have the first best speaker in District competition, Jeff­ery Hensel, but it had the first four top speakers.  The top four speakers were Jeffery Hensel, Hennah Patel, Kee­gan Huff and Ivan Marez.

FM 27 closed for bridge repairs

Beginning, Monday, Feb. 6, at 8 a.m., the Texas Department of Transportation’s  contractor will close FM 27 at Tehuacana Creek to repair the bridge pilings over Tehuacana Creek. This closure is expected to last only one day.
Changeable message boards will be in place warning the public of this closure.  Motorists should find an alternate route.
This $17,900 bridge work project is contracted to Partner Maria Services, of Austin. 
"TxDOT and their contractor appreciate everyone’s patience during this construction," said TxDOT representative Bobby Colwell. "If you have any questions or concerns about this project, please contact TxDOT at 903-389-3530.
Mexia firefighters cut woman out of wrecked car

Mexia Fire Department first responders, after cutting off the windshield of a wrecked car on Belknap Street south of Mexia Monday, work to extract the driver, Cynthia Smith, 52, of Mexia. Within a few minutes, they were successful, and Smith, who had been wearing a seatbelt and appeared uninjured, was evaluated and released at the scene.
A driver called 911 for help Monday as she was suspended nearly upside-down in her wrecked car.
Cynthia Smith, 52, of Mexia, was driving a white 2006 Pontiac G6 southbound on Belknap Street, about a mile and a half south of Tyler Street when she lost control of her car in the thick crown in the middle of the street, which is actually a dirt road that far south of the city.

Mexia Junior High football athlete Jaylen Gipson, 13, has been named to the 3rd Annual Offense-Defense Youth All-American Bowl.
Jaylen Gipson, a quarterback for the Mexia Junior High Blackcats, will join dozens of peers in his age group nationwide in an East meets West clash that is part of a week long series of events leading up to the nationally-televised, 6th Annual Offense-Defense All-American Bowl, an all-star football game of sililar format showcasing 80 of the top high school seniors in the country.

Mexia Blackcat Kaylon Watson springs into action and grabs the rebound during the 93-65 victory over Madisonville in game one of district earlier this season.
The 22-5 Mexia Black­cats outscored the Palestine Wildcats on Friday 88-58, improving to an impressive 5-0 in district.
The win over the Wildcats places Mexia in first place overall in district.
Today Mexia defends Blackcat court from the Madisonville  Mustangs following the Lady Cat games that will begin  at 5 p.m.
The last time these two teams met was during the first game of district, earlier this season. Mexia took a huge lead early and walked away with a 93-65 victory.

Lady Cats dominate

The Mexia Lady Cats improved to 21-7 after their 61-39 victory over the Palestine Lady Wildcats Friday afternoon.
The victory moves the Lady Cats to 5-2 overall in district. The L-Cats will face the Madisonville Lady Mustangs today after the junior varsity squad game at 5 p.m.
In the first part of the season, the Lady Mustangs  squeaked by Mexia 58-53.

Wortham power-lifting teams pumped up

Three members of the Wortham High School power-lifting team earned medals in their respective weight class divisions at the Bosqueville power-lifting meet last weekend. Coach Shane Doege and Assistant Coach Sandy Young took nine members of the Wortham High School power-lifting team to Bosqueville last weekend for the third meet of the season. The three girls who won in addition to six boys competed were: David Busby, Camren Lewis, Haven Proulx, Shane Sykora, Cody Beck, Daniel Perez, and Angus Worcester. 
Coach Doege said, “The Bulldogs competed in several weight divisions. Everyone did a great job.”
