Several Mexia runners earn slots at state meet
Despite weather delays, which forc-ed all of the Region III Class 3A running events at the Regional Track Meet to be postponed until Monday afternoon, the Mexia Blackcats track team will be well represented at the state track meet in Austin on May 10-11.
Mexia took second in the Boys 4x100 Meter Relay, second in the Boys 100 Meter Dash, second in the Girls 4x100 and 4x200 Relay races and first place in the Girls 400 Meter.
Overall, the Mexia girls finished in third place as a team with 59 points total, one point behind Waco La Vega and, behind leader Waco Connally. The boys finished in ninth place out of 31 teams with 24 points. West Orange-Stark finished as the overall team leader with 83 points.
Ashley Johnson qualified for Monday’s finals in the 400 Meter with a time of 1:00.27, good enough for the fifth spot. In the finals, Johnson trimmed nearly three-seconds off of her time and earned the top spot in the event with a time of 57.79.
Also competing for Mexia in the event was Jynesha Jackson, who qualified in the fourth spot with a time of 59.35. Jackson finished sixth in the finals with a time of 1:01.96.
Moving on to the 4x100 Relay – the team of Taylor Porter, Que ‘Shea King, Ariel Ballard and Tee Owens finished in second place in the finals with a time of 48.23.
In the 4x200 Relay, Ashley Johnson, Ballard, King and Owens finished with a time of 1:41.38, good enough for the second place finish in the finals.
