The Mexia Blackcats will be participating in the Second Annual Dale Hansen Football Classic this coming Saturday, Sept. 7, against the Alvarado Indians with kickoff slated to start at 7:30 p.m. at Stuart B. Lumpkins Stadium in Waxahachie. The classic is named in honor of longtime award winning sportscaster Hansen, who is entering his fourth decade in the DFW area.
Twelve seniors from of the six teams – a boy and girl from each school – will have a chance to win a scholarship this weekend at the Champion’s Breakfast to be held prior to the games.
This year, the Blackcats have a score to settle with the Indians, the same team they faced in the first classic last September. Alvarado ended up defeating Mexia 54-14.
The Indians won their season opener this past Friday night against Bridgeport, 42-30, mainly on the shoulders of their running back Adrian Hendrick, who ran for 342 yards on 35 carries and scored five touchdowns in the game. The Blackcats defense will most likely work this week in practice on a way to contain him.
