Memorial services for Virginia Rose Retz will be held Thursday, Sept. 19, at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Mexia. The Rev. Marcus Sheffield will officiate.

Retz, 80, passed away Saturday, Sept. 14, 2013, at her residence near Donie. Retz was diagnosed with cancer and expected to live for only three months, but her battle lasted over two-and-a-half years.

She was born and raised in Richmond, Ind. She married Keith Retz on June 1, 1951, and they shared over 62 years together. Retz moved to Texas in 1972, and lived in Sanger for 33 years before moving to Freestone County in 1994.

Retz was an accomplished roper, heeling steers, and barrel racer and won numerous prizes and saddles in both events. She was a true animal lover and rescued several dogs over the years. Retz was a very kind person, never met a stranger, and always saw the good in people. She worked in education as a payroll director for several years. She was a great mom and wife and will be greatly missed. Retz was a fine Christian lady and attended the Methodist Church in Donie.

She is survived by her husband, Keith Retz; one son, Mike Retz and wife, Donna, all of Donie; two grandsons; one sister, Sue Ann Cappa and husband, Dan, of Richmond, Ind.; one niece; one nephew; special friends, Jessica and Josh Holliman, Vivki Smith and John and Lisa Newsome.

Retz was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Dorothy Lohrey.
