A row of large round hay bales off a county road in Mexia caught fire late Monday afternoon, bringing Mexia Fire Department personnel to quench the flames.

The call went out about 5:15 p.m., and the department sent four vehicles in response. The fire was off LCR 254 just over half a mile east of Ross Drive.

Firefighters were on the scene within about 3 minutes, and neighbors came out to watch them work. About 100 bales were aligned along the long drive, but only 11 were consumed by the fire.

“We had to roll the bales out,” said Mexia Fire Chief Clayton Shivers
