City may address Bistone rates with lawyers

Mexia City Council is set to convene behind closed doors with city lawyers, most likely to discuss their dispute with the city’s water supplier, when they meet Tuesday night.

Bistone Water Supply District took out a $6 million loan for improvements without notifying the city, a move that could mean 27- to 30-percent higher water bills for city residents. Bistone manages Lake Mexia and also supplies water to the city via deep wells near Personville.

Neither the City Council nor city manager Larry Brown heard back from Bistone until the district presented results of a related water rate study Sept. 16, at which time Bistone let city representatives know the district had already taken out $6 million in bonds that it expects to be paid back mostly through higher bills for city water customers.
