Lady Cats head into hoops season ranked first in state

The pre-season polls are out for Texas high school girls’ basketball and the top dog – or rather cat that is – in Class 3A statewide is none other than your Mexia Lady Cats at No. 1.
Last season the Lady Cats weren’t expected to go much higher than a share of the district title with Fairfield – which escaped them after suffering both district losses to the hands of the Lady Eagles – and didn’t get a whole lot of respect in the polls either.
It took going undefeated in the playoffs and winning two games at the state tournament, including the championship against a tough Kennedale team (ranked No. 2 pre-season) in which the Lady Cats won, 67-62, for their first state crown in school history, in order for the team to gain respect across the state.
But Lady Cat fans knew all along that last season’s team was something more than special. They were champions, both in their hearts and on the court.
