Damian Matthews scored five points and Danny Huckaby added four to help the Mexia Blackcats charge out on top in the first period of play against the Mabank Panthers in route to their 75-33 round one win at the Fairfield Invitational Basketball Tournament on Thursday.
Mexia jumped out to a 46-18 halftime lead and could have easily hit the century mark, but Coach Tony Leamon slowed the tempo somewhat in the third period, giving his bench a chance for more minutes of playing time.
The Blackcats still managed to outscore Mabank 29-15 in the second half and all 12 Mexia players scored in the game.
“We got a lot of things to work on,” said Leamon afterwards. “We just try to get better each day and each week … it’s still early in the year. The kids are working hard and as long as they’re working hard it’s going to be good at the end of the day.”
