Limestone County commissioners heard an update on hunger in Central Texas and what they need to know to make sure residents realize what help is available for them.

Kathy Green, Director of Advocacy and Public Policy for the Capital Area Food Bank of Texas, in Austin, made the presentation at the court’s Dec. 9 meeting.

Capital Area Food Bank is one of 21 food banks in Texas, she told the court. Capital Area Food Bank in turn covers 21 counties, including Limestone. Local food pantries buy groceries from the food bank at very low rates to make sure their shelves are stocked when people come to them for help.

“Basically, the food bank, if you’re not familiar with it, is like the bank, and our partner agencies are like the ATMs,” Green said. “So the partner agencies in our areas get food from us; they may not get 100 percent of their food from us, but they do get a big portion of it.
