Hazel ‘Nannie’ McCullen Masters
Funeral services for Hazel Masters will be held Saturday, Dec. 28, at 2 p.m. at Head Branch Baptist Church, 605 McClintic St. in Groesbeck, with eulogist Elder James Lucas.
Hazel Masters was born July 5, 1944, in Thornton, to James and Vernell McCullen.
She attended school at Rosenwald in Thornton, and later became a student at Blacksheer and Washington High schools in Groesbeck.
She joined and was baptized at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Thornton, at an early age.
She was a friend to all and would generously give the clothes off her back to someone in need.
She later moved back home where she met and married Julius Masters on Dec. 23, 1981.
Hazel worked for the Mexia State School as a medical driver for many years until she retired.
She became an active member of Greater Grace Tabernacle C.O.G.I.C. in Groesbeck,, where she was a dedicated member and Christian. She was a loving mother, sister and grandmother.
Hazel passed away Dec. 24, 2013. She was preceded in death by both parents, James and Vernell McCullen; three brothers, Eugene Thomas, John McCullen and Willie McCullen; one sister, Sharon Harris; and one nephew, Reggie McCullen.
She is survived by her husband, Julius Masters; nine children, Anthony McCullen, Robert McCullen, Tammy McCullen, Gary (Faye) Masters, Gerald Masters, Kevin Masters, Sherry (Shon) West, Pam Echols and Julia Echols; two sisters, Nell McCullen, of Waco, and Wanda (Walter) Cunningham, of Irving; one brother, Marshall McCullen, of Thornton; and a host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends. She will be truly missed.
