A Mexia man could only watch as his home burned Monday.

Mexia firefighters were called to the home of Leslie Winn, at 409 N. Herman St. in Mexia, about 3 p.m. and found thick smoke pouring from the house.

Within minutes, large flames could be seen shooting out of the top of the wooden frame house, which was located immediately next to the south side of the Milam Street overpass, near its west end.

At least three Mexia Fire Department vehicles as well as the fire departments of Mexia State Supported Living Center and Wortham responded to the blaze. Mexia Police officers blocked traffic to the area.
