January means it’s time to commemorate the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr., and admirers of the late Dr. King are planning a parade and two programs this coming weekend in Mexia.

The celebration of King’s life and work begins Saturday morning, Jan. 18, with a parade at 11 a.m. Lineup for those interested in participating is at 10:30 on McKinney Street in front of the Civic Center.

Event organizer Ada Connor is encouraging people to enter floats, bands, cars, trucks, 4-wheelers, bicycles, motorcycles, go-carts, horses – or just walk to show solidarity with the ideals of equality and dignity for all people.

The theme this year, she said, is “Unity in our community: Keeping the dream alive.”
