Glen Bernhard Benson, 89, of Lake Mexia, passed away Jan. 13, 2014, at his home. Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 20, at Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery in Dallas, with Chaplain Tom Parker officiating.
Glen was born Aug. 21, 1924, in Lisbon, Ill., to Gunval and Myrtle Jurene Walker Benson; one of ten children.
He proudly served in the U.S. Navy, during World War II, on the USS Cascade. After service, he went to work for Valley Telephone in Oregon and, in 1968, was transferred to Texas to install cable.
While working in Texas, he met Mary Bounds and they married on May 4, 1968, in Navasota. Glen started a TV repair and security system business in Navasota. They later moved to Illinois, where he worked for several years and then moved to Huntington, where he retired from the Memorial Hospital in Lufkin.
After retiring, they moved to Lake Mexia in 1998. Glen loved to fish, hunt and raise a large vegetable garden. Some of his happiest days were also spent visiting with fellow veterans and talking about the old days.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Mary; sisters Gertrude, Marie, Jeanette and Jenny; and brothers John, Stanley and Lenord.
Glen is survived by four daughters, Christy Ann Tonn, Claudia Cornell, Cynthia Hamilton and Cheryl Lynn McGinn; stepdaughter Debbie Burgess and husband Asa, of Mexia; stepson, Cary Joe Bounds and wife Reatha, of Houston; a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren; two sisters, Gladys Lindt and Josephine White; and a number of nieces and nephews.
