There was much fanfare and excitement in Groesbeck prior to Tuesday’s rivalry game against Mexia, but from the tip it was all Blackcats as they rolled to a 105-57 victory.

Mexia – ranked 20th in the latest statewide 3A poll – has won three straight by an average of 43 points.

“We have gained our intensity back,” said Mexia coach Tony Leamon. “The Fairfield loss woke us up and the kids have done a great job in practice since then working hard in practice and working extra on their shooting.”

The Blackcats were firing on all cylinders, driving to the basket and drawing fouls, finding the open man under the basket or just spotting up for a long three-pointer and knocking it down. Mexia held a modest 23-15 lead after the first quarter, but exploded for 37 in the second for a 60-26 halftime advantage.
