“Strive to win this award, strive to do things the right way … because if everybody that’s here was a freshman, on the JV, tries to do the things it takes to win this award or any other award … your team’s going to be better. You’re going to win. You’re not going to win just four games, you’re going to win 14 games.” Those were just some of the encouraging words aimed towards Blackcats players from Mexia alumnus, Justin Reed, who was a former recipient of the distinguished Shield of Honor award presented to a football player each year during the annual awards banquet held at the First Baptist Church Christian Life Center.
Reed was the guest speaker at Thursday evening’s banquet, pointing out the improvements that have been made in the Mexia football program over the past couple of seasons, much in part to the dedication of Head Coach Lamonte Chambers and his coaching staff in working with the athletes to not only improve their performance on the field, but also in the classroom.
Mexia players from freshman, junior varsity and varsity football teams were all recognized and introduced to the jam packed audience in attendance.
Several varsity team members received special awards during the banquet.
