Mexia’s Tyrik Ray checks a Fairfield player when the teams met earlier this month. The second time was the charm for the Blackcats, who avenged their 45-52 loss to Fairfield Jan. 10 with a 76-56 victory Tuesday night. Mexia News file photo

The Blackcats had been waiting since Jan. 10 for another shot at Fairfield, and Mexia made sure to make the most of the opportunity with a dominant 76-56 win over the 19th-ranked Eagles.

“All the credit for this win goes to our kids,” said coach Tony Leamon. “They executed the game plan, fought the fatigue and the fouls and they made big shots. Beating a team like that shows what we can do when we are ready to play.”

The physical play and pressure defense of both teams put its stamp on the game early and Mexia was forced to adjust its rotations after Ike Jones drew a pair of fouls in the first two minutes, then Tyrik Ray drew a pair as well off the bench before the game was four minutes old.

There were 45 fouls called in the game and 50 free throw attempts between the two teams.
