The Mexia DECA 2014 Financial Literacy Promotion team earned the state championship at a recent competition held in Dallas and are on their way to international competition.
The competition, against 3A, 4A and 5A schools, took place the weekend of Feb. 22 at the Texas DECA State Conference, attended by 3,000 students and advisers from all over Texas.
Team members Sarah Contreras and Helena Westphal-Franklin, both seniors, and sophomore Jossie Palacios won the state trophy and will now compete at the international conference in May in Atlanta, Georgia.
This is Sarah's second time to win the state competition. Helena and Jossie are not only first-year competitors, but first-year DECA members. The Mexia DECA team organized a financial literacy campaign targeting Mexia Junior High School students. The ongoing project includes learning activities, math games, budgeting scenarios, a economics fashion show and presentations by other DECA members who work at businesses in the community.
