Varsity, JV track teams make good showings at meet


Just another casual stroll across the finish line for the Blackcats Tee Owens. Owens finished the 100 Meter Dash in first with a time of 12.57. Owens also finished first in the Long Jump competition and teamed up with Taylor Porter, Jy Jackson and Bre Stoner in the 4x100 Meter Relay for a first place finish as the Mexia girls placed second overall in the meet.

The Blackcats competed in the Fairfield High School Invitational Track Meet on Thursday, March 27 with the Mexia JV boys finishing third, JV girls third, varsity boys second and varsity girls placing second in the overall standings.
The JV 4x200 Meter Relay team of Jaime Salazaar, Michael Miller, Devin Banks and Matron Gerald had an outstanding race, sprinting all out on the last leg to a first place finish with a time of 1:35.19 edging out Palestine’s time of 1:37.67. Devin Banks placed first in the High Jump, Avery Williams took the top spot in the Triple Jump, while Jashima Smith won first in the Discus and Alexandra Harris finished second in the 800 Meter Dash.
On the varsity side, Danny Huckaby blew away the competition in the 100 Meter Dash with a first place time of 11.29. Both the 4x100 Meter and 4x200 Meter Relay teams finished strong in their races with first and second place respectively, while LaVictor McKnight leaped to a second place finish in the High Jump.
In the girl’s competition, Tee Owens and Bre Stoner finish one-two in the 100 Meter Dash, while Jy Jackson picked up a first place medal in the 400 Meter Run. Owens and Jackson also finished first and second, respectively, in the Long Jump. And it was business as usual for the 4x100 Meter Relay team of Owens, Taylor Porter, Jackson and Stoner, finishing on top with a time of 49.33.
