Football is back as mainly offensive quarterbacks and receivers from Mexia gear up for the upcoming 7-on-7 competition that starts at the end of the month. One of the differences between regular football (shown in this file photo) and 7-on-7 is players cannot wear helmets, pads and no tackling are allowed. The game is passing oriented only. Following up on the success of making it to the Texas State 7-on-7 Football Tournament last summer, Mexia is gearing up for another run this year as the season is scheduled to begin at the end of this month.
This year’s league games will be played in Fairfield, which will include the host team participating along with Corsicana, Corsicana Mildred, Teague and several other high school teams.
Games will be played on Tuesdays beginning May 27 and during the month of June.
The league basically serves as a warm-up for several qualifying tournaments that will be played on Saturdays in June.
Mexia is scheduled to play in one of the qualifying tournaments in McGregor on May 24.
Coming back for the Mexia team this season are Ronald Jackson, Jaylen Gipson, Damion Stoner, Tyrik Ray, Karoam Tatum and Deandre Williams. Several players from the junior varsity and freshman teams will join the returning players this season.
Last year’s success in the tournament and league helped boost the Blackcats passing game throughout the 2013 season.
For those unfamiliar with 7-on-7 football, each team fields seven offensive players lined up against seven defensive players.
