Mexia businesses and organizations have long supported Mexia schoolchildren with giveaways of needed school supplies, but this year many groups are coordinating their efforts into one big school supply drive on Saturday, Aug. 16, complete with free food, soft drinks, music and fun.
The coordinated group is called Mexia Cares, and the school supplies are intended for Mexia students from pre-school through fifth grade. The event is to take place at the south parking lot, which is between Mexia High and R.Q. Sims Intermediate schools, behind the tennis courts, from 10 a.m. to noon.
Attendees are encouraged to park either at the high school or at Sims, then walk to the south parking lot, which will be lined with booths or tables of participating businesses, churches and groups.
All children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian, and the plan is for participants to first go by the Mexia Independent School District tent to check in and verify they are Mexia students.
