Fred Masters

Fred Masters, of Thornton, passed away Monday, Sept. 9, 2013, at Limestone Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 12, in the Groesbeck Funeral Home Chapel. Ministers Sedric Thomas, Tracy Sims, Randy Ayres and Billy Anderson will conduct the services, and burial will follow in Thornton Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Steven Dale Masters, Mason Keith Masters, Larry McKenzie Masters, Michael Shane Masters, Dustin Joe Masters, Chesley Kane Sullivan, Kristopher Keith Masters, Randal Craig Masters, Mason McKenzie Masters and Michael Brandon Noey. Honorary pallbearers will be Bobby Ward, James “Bubba” Pollard, Marcus Ray Hanna, Joel Thomas, Grady “Butch” Masters, Ty Austin Pagel, William Heath Masters, John Kyle “Bubba” Sullivan and Jimmy Rucker.

Alvin ‘Al’ Maddox Jr.

Alvin “Al” Maddox Jr. was born Aug. 8, 1930, in Prairie Hill, and passed peacefully from a stroke at age 83, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

He served 11 years in the U.S. Navy and was a veteran of the Korean War. Al earned a bachelor’s degree in business from Sam Houston State University and went on to have a long, successful career in law enforcement. He worked with the State Liquor Control Board and the Dallas Sheriff’s office, beginning his career under Sheriff Bill Decker. 

One of his main interests was the Kennedy assassination and he often participated in programs at the Sixth Floor Museum, sharing his memories of that tragic day.

He was known for his enjoyment of coin collecting, his keen sense of humor, love for his family and love for his sweet dogs, Phybe and Snowball.

Doris Jean Gillespie McWilliams

The angelic hosts came for Mrs. McWilliams last Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2013, in the Teague Nursing and Rehab Center among loving family and devoted friends.

Viewing will be Friday, Sept. 6, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Moore’s Angelic Funeral Home, 406 Monroe St. in Teague; and with a musical tribute service from 6-7 p.m. at the First Baptist Church North Teague, 112 Grayson St. in Teague. Fu­ner­al services will be held Saturday, Sept. 7, at 11 a.m. in the First Baptist Church, 209 N. Sixth St. in Teague, with the Rev. Cleo High and Pastor Larry Rose, officiating.

Interment will be in the Antioch Cermetery, North First Street in Teague.

Doris J. McWilliams was the third child of Roosevelt Gillespie and Molly Lucille Wade Gillespie and was born in the Salem Community of Freestone County on Aug. 23, 1925.

Vickie Alane Ridge Weaver

Vickie Alane Ridge Wea­ver, 52, passed away on Sept. 2, 2013, in Richland.

Graveside services will be held on Thursday, Sept. 5, at 10 a.m. at Richland Cemetery, with the Rev. Justin Colquette officiating. Family visitation will be held on Wednesday evening, 6-8 p.m. at Porter Chapel in Wortham.

Vickie was born on Sept. 7, 1960, in Mexia, to J.R. and Sue Ridge.

She was a woodworker, with particular focus on picture frames. She had been in the community her entire life.
She married Teddy Weaver on April 3, 1985.

Surviving Mrs. Weaver are her husband; parents; sons Cole Ridge and wife Kristie, of Fairfield, and Ketch Weaver and wife Kayla, of Langley; grandchildren Kaylie Grace Ridge and Kodie Ann Weaver; brother Rickey Ridge and wife Kristi; and nephews Trent and Blake Ridge.

Jackie Don Morton

A memorial service and family gathering for Jackie Don Morton, 67, of Palestine and formerly of Mexia, will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, on Morton Lane in the Forest Glade area of Mexia.

Mr. Morton died Monday, Sept. 2, at Hospice of East Texas, in Tyler.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made in Mr. Morton’s name to Hospice of East Texas, 4111 University Blvd., Tyler, TX 75701, phone 903-266-3400.

Hattie Mae Gamble Williams

Hattie Mae Gamble Williams, 62, of Mexia died Monday, Sept. 2, 2013 at Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center in Waco.
She was born Jan. 18, 1951 in Limestone County.

She is survived by her daughter, Sonya Dixon of Euless; son, Byron Dixon and sister, Katie Gamble, both of Waco.

Visitation with the family will be held Thursday, Sept. 5 from 7 to 8 p.m. in the chapel at Dorsey-Keatts Funeral Home in Mexia.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 6, in the same location, with the Rev. Lester Brown officiating. Burial will follow at the Cotton Gin Cem­e­tery in Freestone County.

Pallbearers will be family and friends.

Rodger Dale Cotton

Rodger Dale Cotton, 63, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2013.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 31, at First Baptist Church in Mexia with Rev. Bob Tarbet and Mr. Ben Bloomer officiating. Interment will follow in the Tehuacana Cemetery.

Rodger was born Feb. 7, 1950 in Mexia, to Woodrow and Mildred Cotton; the second of four children.
He married his best friend, Betty Jean Robinson, on May 30, 1969 in Kirvin. They had many traveling and hunting adventures during their 44 years together. They were blessed with two daughters, Brandi Jean and Rustyn Dale, whom they raised to be respectful, God-fearing and family-oriented adults.

At the time of his passing, Rodger had three grandchildren who adored him. Each had received their own nickname from Rodger at birth.

Jimmy Wayne Rhodes

Jimmy Wayne Rhodes, of Thornton, passed away Friday, Aug. 23, 2013, at the Limestone Medical Center, at age 68.

Visitation was Saturday, Aug. 24,, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Groesbeck Funeral Home.

Funeral services were 2: p.m. Sunday, Aug. 25, at the Groesbeck Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Steve Nance officiating. Music was provided by Phil Koester and Mrs. Ginger Fritz.

Pallbearers were Nick Nichols, Michael McGilvray, Ronald Crane, Scott Smith, Bradley Swick and Marshall McCullen. Honorary pallbearers were David Diver, Charlie King, Rawls King, John Banks Campbell, Lonnie Laqua, David Beard and Steve Nance.
Jimmy was born Dec. 19, 1944 to Charles Rhodes and Edna Earl (Carpenter) Rhodes.

Jimmy and Barbara Ann Allman both graduated together in 1963. They were united in marriage on Jan. 26, 1965 at the home of Brother Malcom Smith in Groesbeck, and celebrated 48 years of marriage.

Garland Edwin Wells Sr.

Garland Edwin Wells Sr. of Brazoria passed away Aug. 22, 2013 at the age of 93. Mr. Wells was born Feb. 3, 1920 in Mexia, to Zelma Hughes Wells and James Edwin Wells.
In addition to his parents, Garland was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Faye Wells in 2008; a grandson, Joel David Wells; and two sisters, Nell Copeland (Luther) and Lucy Cooksey (L.C.).
He is survived by his sons, Garland E. Wells Jr. (Speedy) and wife, Nelva, Jerry L. Wells and wife, Jeannie, and Dennis E. Wells, and wife, Janet; his half-brother, Jim Wells and wife Candis; half-sister, Linda Keeton and husband Stan; cousin, Durwood Kennedy; special sister-in-law, Martha Cox; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and many other relatives and friends.
