Jackie Don Morton

A memorial service and family gathering for Jackie Don Morton, 67, of Palestine and formerly of Mexia, will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, on Morton Lane in the Forest Glade area of Mexia.

Mr. Morton died Monday, Sept. 2, at Hospice of East Texas, in Tyler.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made in Mr. Morton’s name to Hospice of East Texas, 4111 University Blvd., Tyler, TX 75701, phone 903-266-3400.

Hattie Mae Gamble Williams

Hattie Mae Gamble Williams, 62, of Mexia died Monday, Sept. 2, 2013 at Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center in Waco.
She was born Jan. 18, 1951 in Limestone County.

She is survived by her daughter, Sonya Dixon of Euless; son, Byron Dixon and sister, Katie Gamble, both of Waco.

Visitation with the family will be held Thursday, Sept. 5 from 7 to 8 p.m. in the chapel at Dorsey-Keatts Funeral Home in Mexia.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 6, in the same location, with the Rev. Lester Brown officiating. Burial will follow at the Cotton Gin Cem­e­tery in Freestone County.

Pallbearers will be family and friends.

Rodger Dale Cotton

Rodger Dale Cotton, 63, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2013.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 31, at First Baptist Church in Mexia with Rev. Bob Tarbet and Mr. Ben Bloomer officiating. Interment will follow in the Tehuacana Cemetery.

Rodger was born Feb. 7, 1950 in Mexia, to Woodrow and Mildred Cotton; the second of four children.
He married his best friend, Betty Jean Robinson, on May 30, 1969 in Kirvin. They had many traveling and hunting adventures during their 44 years together. They were blessed with two daughters, Brandi Jean and Rustyn Dale, whom they raised to be respectful, God-fearing and family-oriented adults.

At the time of his passing, Rodger had three grandchildren who adored him. Each had received their own nickname from Rodger at birth.

Jimmy Wayne Rhodes

Jimmy Wayne Rhodes, of Thornton, passed away Friday, Aug. 23, 2013, at the Limestone Medical Center, at age 68.

Visitation was Saturday, Aug. 24,, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Groesbeck Funeral Home.

Funeral services were 2: p.m. Sunday, Aug. 25, at the Groesbeck Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Steve Nance officiating. Music was provided by Phil Koester and Mrs. Ginger Fritz.

Pallbearers were Nick Nichols, Michael McGilvray, Ronald Crane, Scott Smith, Bradley Swick and Marshall McCullen. Honorary pallbearers were David Diver, Charlie King, Rawls King, John Banks Campbell, Lonnie Laqua, David Beard and Steve Nance.
Jimmy was born Dec. 19, 1944 to Charles Rhodes and Edna Earl (Carpenter) Rhodes.

Jimmy and Barbara Ann Allman both graduated together in 1963. They were united in marriage on Jan. 26, 1965 at the home of Brother Malcom Smith in Groesbeck, and celebrated 48 years of marriage.

Garland Edwin Wells Sr.

Garland Edwin Wells Sr. of Brazoria passed away Aug. 22, 2013 at the age of 93. Mr. Wells was born Feb. 3, 1920 in Mexia, to Zelma Hughes Wells and James Edwin Wells.
In addition to his parents, Garland was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Faye Wells in 2008; a grandson, Joel David Wells; and two sisters, Nell Copeland (Luther) and Lucy Cooksey (L.C.).
He is survived by his sons, Garland E. Wells Jr. (Speedy) and wife, Nelva, Jerry L. Wells and wife, Jeannie, and Dennis E. Wells, and wife, Janet; his half-brother, Jim Wells and wife Candis; half-sister, Linda Keeton and husband Stan; cousin, Durwood Kennedy; special sister-in-law, Martha Cox; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and many other relatives and friends.

James Claudie Allsup

James Claudie Allsup, 93, of Mexia, began his eternal rest on Sunday, Aug. 18, 2013.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Aug. 24, at 10 a.m. at Porter Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. James Rineker and the Rev. Chris Nickleberry officiating. Interment with military honors will follow at Point Enterprise Cemetery. Family visitation will be held on Friday evening, 4-6 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mr. Allsup was born on Sept. 10, 1919, in Payne Springs, to Henry V. and Mary Granthom Allsup. He enlisted in the Army in 1944 and was among the third wave in the storming of Utah Beach in the Invasion of Normandy in June 1944. He was wounded on July 4, 1944.

Frances Juanita Wilson

Frances Juanita Wilson, of Groesbeck, passed away on Monday, Aug. 19, 2013, at the Groesbeck LTC, at age 91.
Funeral services will be held at 2 P.M. on Thursday, Aug. 22, at the Church of Christ in Groesbeck. Brother Richard Williams of the Groesbeck Church of Christ and Brother Benny Lucus of the Shiloh Church of Christ will officiate, and burial will follow in Hogan Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Danny Saling, Paul Wilson, Brandon Wilson, Brandon Nugent, Keith Easter and Skip Spurlock.

Frances was born March 7, 1922, to James Henry Hudson and Bertha Edie (Dickey) Hudson at Big Hill. She started school at Big Hill and graduated from Thornton High School. Frances was united in marriage with Vestle Edward Wilson on April 4, 1941, at the home of Brother Malcolm Smith. They farmed with her parents at Big Hill for awhile, then lived some years at Ben Hur, and later moved to Thornton, to farm and ranch and raise their family.

Mary Alice Cooper Hatcher

The angelic hosts came for Mary Alice Cooper Hatcher, 61, on Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2013, at the Fairview Healthcare Center in Fairfield, among loving family and devoted friends.

A viewing will be held Friday, Aug. 16 at Moore’s Angelic Funeral Home, 406 Monroe St. in Teague, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. during the wake service.

Funeral services will be Saturday, Aug. 17, at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church, 303 South Mount St. in Fairfield. Rev. Darrell Houston, pastor of St. Luke and Mt. Vernon United Methodist Churches, Houston, is officiating and Bishop Sam Cumby, pastor of Behind the Veil in Fairfield, and will serve as eulogist. Interment will take place at Fairfield Baptist Cemetery in Fairfield.

Mary Alice Cooper Hatcher was born on Jan. 24, 1952 in Fairfield. She was the second child born to Frank and Annie Lee Turner Cooper.

Her parents and oldest brother, Joe Frank Cooper, preceded her in death.

William Eddie Potillo

The angelic hosts came for William Eddie Potillo, 57, on Wednesday, July 31, 2013, at his residence in Fairfield, among loving family and devoted friends.

A memorial service for Mr. Potillo will be held Saturday, Aug. 17, at 11 a.m. at Moore’s Angelic Funeral Home Chapel, 406 Monrore St. in Teague. The Rev. Obry Earl Hatcher will official.

William Eddie was the third child of Matthew and Annette Potillo, and was born Sept. 5, 1955, in Orlando, Fla. He grew up in Fairfield, where he attended Dogan High School.

Eddie was baptized in the Fairfield Missionary Baptist Church, in Fairfield.

William Eddie and Cynthia Johnson were married in Fairfield.

His employment career included being custodian at The Dallas Market Center and at Parkland Hospital, in Dallas.
Eddie’s interest were reading, baseball and basketball, and being with his children, family and friends.

He will be remembered most for his sharp wit and his sense of humor.
