Nelda Lou Blackmon

Nelda Lou Blackmon, 76, of Mexia, passed away Aug. 1, 2013 in Mexia. Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 3, at Blair-Stubbs Chapel with Pastor Earl Sterling officiating. Interment will follow in the Tehuacana Cemetery.

Nelda was born Oct. 12, 1936, in Bremond, to George Minyard and Ethel Wiley Sterling. She had been a resident of Mexia for 60 years. Nelda married the love of her life, Fred Joseph Blackmon, on April 24, 1953 in Mexia. Her love and devotion to God and her family were evident in the way she lived her life. She supported her children and grandchildren in all of the activities in which they chose to participate. Many will remember Nelda for her smile and great sense of humor.

Louis Kukulski

Louis Kukulski, 94, formerly of Thornton, passed away July 12, 2013, in Chicago. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m., Monday, Aug. 5, in the Thornton Cemetery, with Father Benji Magnaye officiating.

Visitation with the family will be 4-6 p.m. on Sunday at Blair-Stubbs Chapel in Thornton.

Louis Kukulski was the beloved husband of the late Belva (nee Stutts); devoted son of the late Petronella (nee Kamykowski) and the late Walter Kukulski; dear brother of Charlotte (late Steve) Olszewski, the late Sally (late Anthony) Schiavo, late Wanda (late Michael) Surdej and the late Bernice Kukluski; and the fond uncle of many nieces and nephews.

Mr. Kukulski served proudly in the United States Army-Air Force during World War II.

Johnnie Lucille Evans-Wallace

Funeral services for Mrs. Johnnie Wallace will be held Tuesday, July 30, at 11 a.m. in the Moore’s Angelic Funeral Home Chapel at 406 Monroe St. in Teague, with the Rev. Cleo High, pastor of Antioch Baptist Church, Mexia, and the Rev. Charles Kelley, pastor of Woods Chapel Baptist Church officiating. Interment will be in the Wortham Cemetery, in Wortham. Viewing will be held Tuesday, July 30, from 10 a.m. until the service begins.

Johnnie Lucille Evans-Wallace, was born on Jan. 5, 1918, to the parentage of the late Richard Evans and the late Mamie Williams Evans, in Kirvin. She professed her belief in Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior and was a member of Woods Chapel Primitive Baptist Church.

She attended school in Kirvin and left home at an early age to pursue better employment opportunities. She worked and lived for many years in Stamford, Conn., Chicago, and White Plains, N.Y., before returning home to Texas, finally settling in Houston until she retired.

Fred Edwin Payne

Fred Edwin Payne, 79, of Waco passed away July 25, 2013 in Waco. Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, July 27, at the Woodland Cemetery in Kirvin, with Rev. Michael King officiating.
Fred was born Nov. 30, 1933 in Streetman, to Charlie Hallie Payne and Polly Mae Bryson. Fred attended schools in Mexia. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and traveled extensively around the world. He had tours of duty in Texas, Okinawa, Japan, Alaska and Ankara, Turkey. He attended Baylor University and later received his bachelor of education degree from the University of Alaska in Fairbanks. He retired from the Air Force in 1972 to live in Waco. Fred worked for Goodwill Industries as a rehabilitation director. Later, he also was employed by Baylor University as a police officer.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Billie and Orville and a sister, Bobbie Walker.

Mattie Idella Dunbar Vernon

The angelic hosts came for Mattie Idella Dunbar Vernon, 75, of Teague, on Monday, July 22, 2013, at the Groesbeck LTC nursing facility among loving family and devoted friends.

A viewing will be held Friday, July 26, from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m., with the family present from 6 to 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 27, at 11 a.m. at Moore’s Angelic Funeral Home Chapel in Teague. The Rev. Walter Franklin, pastor of Teague Circuit United Methodist Churches will officiate and the Rev. Larry Rose Jr., pastor of First Baptist North Teague, will serve as eulogist. Interment will take place at the Antioch Cemetery in Teague.

Mattie Vernon was born the only child of Ned Burks and Lura “Blackie” Dunbar on March 11, 1938, in Freestone County.

Funeral services for Mother Jerline Harrison will be held Saturday, July 20, at 10 a.m. at New Greater Emanuell Baptist Church, 2554 East Ann Arbor Blvd., Dallas, Rev. R.L Washington Sr., pastor and eulogist.
Jerline Harrison was born April 7, 1943 to the parentage of Jannie Lee Carpenter and P.V. Finley. She received formal education at the Wilmer Hutchinson School in Dallas. Her occupation was a certified nursing assistant.
She confessed Christ at an early age, and united with New Greater Emanuell Church under the leadership of Rev. C.L. Vesley, in Dallas.
She met and married the late James Ray Harrison, and to this union five children were born.
She was preceded in death by her mother and father, two brothers and her husband.

Funeral service for Dora Keenum will be held Sunday, July 21, 2013 at 2 p.m. at Pearly Gates Funeral Home Chapel in Mexia. Visitation will be held on Saturday, July 20, from 6 to 7 p.m. at Pearly Gates Funeral Home.
Dora Lee “Big MaMa” Keenum 69, of Mexia, peacefully went home on July 16, 2013, surrounded by family and friends at Navarrow Regional Hospital in Corsicana, Tx.
Dora Lee was born April 7, 1944 in Freeport, to Lester Foley and Minnie Robertson. Dora Lee was known to many people as Big Mama. She was always happiest when she was surrounded by her loved ones. She worked for many years as a nurse, and she loved taking care of the elderly. Dora Lee was received in heaven by her parents, Lester and Minnie Foley, and husband, David Keenum.

Bryan Kevin Sterling

Bryan Kevin Sterling, 40, of Mexia, passed away July 15, 2013, in Waco. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, July 17, at First Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Tom Prentiss officiating. Interment was in the Forest Glade Cemetery.
Bryan was born Dec. 20, 1972, in Wortham, to Earl Sterling and Romelda Garber Moffett. He was a loving and gentle-hearted son who loved his family and everyone he met. He loved going to church, holidays, fishing and swimming. Bryan, especially, looked forward to family gatherings. He was happiest when he was with his family. Although he will be truly missed by his family here on earth, they take great comfort in knowing he is now with God and his heavenly family.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, John and Maxine Sterling; and Claude “Tennessee” and Louise Garber.

J.W. Cargile

J.W. Cargile, 60, of Me­xia, passed away July 14, 2013, in Mexia. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Wednesday, July 17, at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Eddie Hayworth officiating. Interment will follow in the Mexia Cemetery.

Visitation with the family will be 6-8 p.m., Tuesday, at Blair-Stubbs Funeral Home.

Wayne was born April 9, 1953, in Barstow, Calif., to E.K. Cargile and Billie Jo Holmes Pollock. He had been a resident of Mexia for 37 years. Wayne married Sharon Bain on June 10, 1977, at the First Baptist Church in Mexia. He had been an employee of the Mexia State Supported Living Center Laundry Department for the past eight years. Wayne was devoted to God and his family; loving husband, father, grandfather and brother. He was always actively involved and very supportive of his children and grandchildren in their school activities or anything in which they were involved. He was a member of Point Enterprise Baptist Church.

William Kimsey Posey Jr.

Funeral services for Wil­liam Kimsey Posey Jr. will be held Wednesday, July 17, at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Teague. Brother Scott Matthews will officiate. Interment will follow the services at Greenwood Cemetery with an escort and honor guard provided by the Patriot Guard.

Visitation will be held Tues­day, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Posey, 85, passed away Sunday, July 14, 2013, at his residence near Teague. He was born Jan. 23, 1928, in Teague and graduated from Teague High School with the Class of 1945.

He attended Navarro College and Baylor University and played football for both schools before entering into the U.S. Marine Corps. He served in China with the 1st Marine Division.
