The City of Mexia, after issuance of the latest round of sales tax rebates from the state, finds itself in some unfamiliar territory - trailing in the two major categories relating to one year ago, and current money relating to this time in 2008.
The latest round of checks reveals a 7.79 percent drop, after receiving $205,000 and three cents, compared with the 2008 check which was $222,337.78.
For year-to-date totals, Mexia has accummulated $1,600,169.31, a drop from last year’s cumulative total of $1,608,147.51.
While Mexia, Coolidge and Thornton showed drops, showing increases were the cities of Groesbeck and Kosse. And, while all three (Mexia, Coolidge and Thornton) showed drops in year-to-date totals, holding true to forms in year-to-date gains were Groesbeck and Kosse.
Texas Comptroller Susan Combs reported that the latest rounds in state collections revealed $1.57 billion in sales tax revenue, down 11.2 percent compared to June 2008. She said the oil and gas, construction and retail trade sectors showed continued weakness, “resulting in a sharp decrease in sales tax collections” - this at a time she sent out the July sales tax allocations totaling $426.7 million to cities, counties, transit systems and special-purpose taxing districts, down 8.8 percent compared to July of 2008. Of this total, Combs sent July sales tax allocations of $284.3 million to Texas cities, down 8.8 percent compared to last July.
Sales tax collections in June, and local sales tax allocations in July, represent sales that occurred in May.
