In current checks issued and year-to-date totals, the City of Mexia has dropped for the second month in a row.
Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts Susan Combs issued the latest round of sales tax rebate checks to cities, counties and to other government entities, revealed the Mexia check to be $244,753.60, down from the check of $245,640.74 at this time one year ago. Mexia also fell in the accummulative totals of year-to-date, from $1,853,788.25 to the current total of $1,844,922.91.
Groesbeck, Kosse and Thornton all showed increases in the two major categories, while Coolidge increased in its current check from a year ago, but fell in the year-to-date tabulations, compared with last year.
Combs said the state collected $1.65 billion in sales tax revenue in July, down 11.6 percent compared with a year ago.
She sent $544 million in August sales tax collections to local governments, down 6.8 percent compared with August 2008. So far this calendar year, sales tax allocations to local governments are down 2.2 percent compared to this time last year.
Sales tax payments of $367.4 million were sent to Texas cities, down 6.5 percent compared to last August. Calendar year-to-date, city sales tax revenues trail 2008 by 2.3 percent.
“Sales tax collections in July were again down significantly as major sectors of the economy, such as retail trade; oil and natural gas; and construction, remain weak,” Susan Combs explained. “The sharp drop in revenue is a reflection of the current poor performance of these sectors, as well as unusually strong sales tax collections in July of 2008.”
August sales tax allocations represent sales taxes collected in June by businesses that report sales taxes monthly, and sales taxes collected in April, May and June by quarterly filers.
