EDITOR's NOTE: This is the final of five articles, reviewing five biographies of persons to be honored Saturday morning at the Mexia Public Schools Museum, in conjunction with Homecoming.

Robert E. (Bob) Wright is another of 2009 distinguished alumni.
Bob was born in Corsicana, April 19, 1934, with "printer's ink in his blood" and moved to Tehuacana at the age of three where his father bought a small drug store. His love for Mexia and the Mexia Black Cat football teams began shortly thereafter when his dad brought him to watch the Black Cats play. At Mexia High School he was a 115-pound Junior Varsity running back who didn't win any awards, but had a real passion for the game. A 1951 graduate of Mexia High school, he received his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Baylor University.
After a two-year stint in the peacetime Army spending 17 months in Germany and time with the National Guard, he started out on his newspaper career writing for THE VERNON DAILY RECORD and THE PORT ARTHUR NEWS before coming to Mexia as sports editor in 1959. Bob says he is now writing sports stories about the grandsons of players he covered.
Quoting from an article written by Kevin Sherington for the DALLAS MORNING NEWS, " The 74-year-old editor is in his 51st season covering Black Cat football which TEXAS FOOTBALL founder Dave Campbell concedes may be a state record for one sportswriter on one beat. "
Bob's most recent honor was being honored at halftime of the All-Star Game in Austin and at a luncheon at the Texas High School Coaches Association as "Texas Sportswriter of the Year," having been nominated by the present Mexia Black Cat head football coach Lee Wiginton.
Bob will soon be married to Peggy for 50 years. They have two sons, Mike and Jim, two daugherts-in-law Bethany and Courtney, and four grandchildren, Jackson, Cole, Mason and Macy. Appropriately Bob and Peggy celebrate their anniversary during football season in September of 2009. Fortunately their big day doesn't fall on a Friday!I
Active in his community and church, Bob has served in numerous areas. He is a member of the Mexia Lions Club and continues to serve as head usher for more than 20 years at the First United Methodist Church.
Bob has been editor of the Mexia Daily News for many years, writing about numerous local events. Several sports editors have come and gone, but he has always reserved the right to cover Mexia Black Cat football. Firmly convinced that there is no other game, he has no plans to retire from covering the town, the team, and the game he loves.
