ST. MATTHEW 11:1 - AND IT came to pass, when Jesus had made an end of commanding His twelve disciples, He departed thence to teach and to preach in their cities.

FIRST AMENDMENT QUOTE: "The First Amendment doesn't exist so we can freely praise our public officials. It exists so we can freely criticize our public officials" - Chris LAMB, educator, College of Charleston, South Carolina, 1998.

Things could get interesting in Limestone County politics. Elenor HOLMES, former County Judge, is coming back for another run to regain her position, and in all probability will oppose Daniel BURKEEN, current County Judge. Elenor told me as much during a visit to the newspaper office Tuesday. Don CORBITT, former longtime Mexia School Board president, hasn't officially announced, but is considering seeking election to the Precinct 2 Commissioner's seat, currently held by Pete KIRVEN. Haven't heard of any other pending signees for county office, but there jolly well might be when filing time gets underway...

Haven't heard anything concrete, but adding to the interest of John Q. Public might be some heated races for both the Mexia City Council and the local school board of trustees. At least, some talk has surfaced that this might be so...
---
Couple all of these races with state and national races, and there might be more entertainment than any of us can stand...

Mexia recently hosted Gatesville to open the football season. The Gatesville quarterback, Jake TRUSS, is the nephew of Wynona LIPSETT of Lake Mexia. Jake and his girlfriend were in a vehicle last Sunday night when both apparently were sleepy and dozed off. The car careened off the roadway, flipped and landed upside down. Jake sustained a cut or two and was badly bruised in the wreck. He was taken to Scott and White Hospital in Temple, but has since been released and is anxious to get back onto the football field. His girlfriend underwent surgery Wednesday at Scott and White. We wish for both of them a rapid recovery...

BEWARE OF SCAMS DEPARTMENT: An elderly gentleman friend telephoned me, wanting to be sure everyone knows about a scam which just made the rounds and could still be operating. A call to this gentleman "notified" him that UPS had a delivery for him "after 2:30." The scamming part, after the initial lies, said for the man to get a money order for $100 and mail "to Noel Reed in Miami, Florida." A whole bunch of other gobbledegook was in the instructions for the local victim, who was smart enough to contact UPS. The latter quickly stated that the delivery firm was not involved, and indeed, it was a scam. So, beware of scams!!!

Former Mexia High basketball standout Ricky HUCKABY is playing basketball in Hungary, according to his mom, who was in the office and said "Ricky asked about you." We wish the best for Huckaby, who played on a State Championship team here...
