Meet the Cheek Sisters, a couple of darling Mexia girls, the daughters of Michael and Tracy Cheek. Their mother, who is employed at a Teague daycare, is an active supporter and worker with the Limestone Animal Rescue Adoption Shelter (LARAS' House). The girls are Josey Cheek, 3, on the left, and Aubrey Cheek, 5. They live in Mexia, but attend schools in Teague. Their t-shirts say it all - Stop Overpopulation, Spay and Neuter. Inset photo, the LARAS' House founders - left to right - Jay Posey and Karien Tratschmann of Mexia, and Ann Burgoon of Lake Mexia. LARAS' House, a young organization, was formed in April of 2007. Mike Wright was emcee for the event. Bob Wright photos

Though they didn’t personally get to taste any of the spaghetti and sauce with the trimmings, the abandoned and abused dogs and cats of Limestone County certainly benefited from that meal being enjoyed by all the people who gathered in Groesbeck to raise money for LARAS’ House. The second annual Spay-ghetti Supper held at the Groesbeck Civic Center brought out many people from throughout Limestone County who paid for the meals, catered by Frankies Pasta & Pizza Restaurant, bid on the tables full of silent auction items and laughed uproariously at the answers given by the four couples who volunteered to play the Not So Newly Wed Game.
As they came into the Civic Center, they had a chance to see the preliminary drawings of the first building for the Limestone Animal Rescue and Adoption Shelter which the all volunteer, tax-exempt organization is ready to build on the five acres of land on Highway 171 it acquired earlier this year. All that is needed is people continuing to step up with donations of money, materials, labor and other services to make that first building a reality.
After Peggy Wilson, president of LARAS’ House made her welcoming comments , the Reverend Brad Brittain of the First United Methodist Church of Mexia gave the blessing. Everyone got in line to get the delicious pasta, salad, rolls and homemade cakes and pies prepared by the board members of LARAS’ House. Helping serve were volunteers such as three girls from Groesbeck High meeting their required community service for the academic honor groups they are part of at the school. They were Stormy Bass, Jordan Kearney and JoSharon Perkins. ‘Christel Hullum was another new volunteer for the animal rescue organization.
As people finished their meals, the emcee, Mike Wright of Bryan and of course a Mexia native, got the crowd ready for the fun game by introducing each of the four couples with a short biographical sketch provided by them. Then came the zaniness of the Not So Newly Wed Game as the four couples who had been together any time from 27 years to 61 years showed how well they knew their spouses by answering the provocative questions posed by Wright. Each of the four couples , John and Kathy Stubbs of Mexia, Randall and Jane Rand of Groesbeck, Reese and Susan Wynn of Mexia and Joe and Glorieda Phillips of Groesbeck won a $25.00 gift certificate from some of the restaurants in Limestone County who support LARAS’ House.
The evening ended with the announcement of the winning bids for the silent auction items as well as the list of winners of the raffle items. Each ticket purchase for the meal entitled the buyer to five chances on the raffle items. The buyer could bunch all of his or her tickets in the raffle jar opposite the item they most wanted or spread them between all of them to have a chance at winning any of them. All of the activities and many of the people at the dinner were photographed by Virginia Riddle who is donating $1.00 to LARAS’ House for each of these pictures ordered from her website. Her website is http://katiebluephotography.smugmug.com
An announcement will be made next week of how much money was raised for the mission of LARAS’ House from the dinner, donations made there and silent auction proceeds. The meantime, LARAS’ House continues to look for volunteers to help with its daily work of caring for and fostering animals, cash donations which are tax-deductible and pet food and supplies to take care of the many animals it takes in on a daily basis.
