Mexia ISD gets good financial ratings, Texas Star I on hold

The annual financial ratings have come in for the Mexia Independent School District (ISD), and for several years, including this year, the word has been good.
    Financial guru and Business Manager of the Mexia ISD Eleanor Fitte, reviewed major aspect of the report, officially known as facts and figures from the Financial Integrity Rating System of Texas. The official rating for Mexia is Superior Achievement.
    This report was issued at the last regularly-scheduled meeting of the Mexia School Board, which also took no action concerning the contract with Texas Star I USA, Inc., an out-of-town security service. “I am disappointed that the Superintendent executed the contract with Texas Star Security without the knowledge of the board, and then brought it before the board for approval,” board member Richard Duncan said. He also said other trustees did not know about the contract before it was presented for what could have been approval.
    It was announced that a one-million-dollar grant is being sought, which would provide every eighth grade student with an IPOD.
    Superintendent Dr. Jason Ceyanes reviewed a letter received from the Texas Education Agency (TEA), a letter informing about approval of $400,000 in Federal funding to hire behavioral support specialists while the district awaits State funding from Senate Bill 643 for the Mexia ISD Developmental Center. “Now that we have some funds, we can do some things we need to do,” declared Greg Goodrum, Director of the Alternative School Program. These include a diagnostician and a hearing-impaired interpreter position for the Developmental Center.
    Contracted services were okayed for psychologists and other related services, with Jason Craig, James M. Charbonnet and William Stern.
    Two-year appointments were made, sanctioning 4-H Club activities as an extracurricular activity and appointing Colleen Longbotham and Chelsea Farris, Limestone Extension Agents, as adjunct faculty members.
    Assistant Superintendent John Turpin reported on the Blackcat Pride Committee, seeking ways to improve communications and relationships with parents, and the public, in general. Major areas being worked on this school year, Turpin explained, include “...ways to have positive effects on how we work with each other, our students and our students’ parents.” He cited a quote “which Peggy Wright gave to me about dealing with people. We discussed the quote, and each campus committee was asked to develop a short training session during our staff development days at the beginning of the school or sometime before the committee’s first meeting in November...We will discuss these at our meeting in November and begin to examine ways to further implement this.” The guiding quote is “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”
    The Mexia ISD cast its votes for George Tidwell to serve on the Limestone County Appraisal District’s board of directors, but took no action concerning the Freestone County appraisal board. In other action, the board, at behest of Dr. Ceyanes, handed out special recognition via certificates to the Technology Department - Fred Zamora, Robert Young, Macey Wilson and Jesus Esquivel.
    All trustees attended the session - Brian Johnson, Culetta Beachum, Steve Trantham, Larry LaRue, Bert Harrison, Richard Duncan and Willie Herring.
