FIRST AMENDMENT QUOTE: “A sound and healthy state of public feeling depends on the sound and healthy state of public information; and this can have no other basis but the freedom of public discussion” - Thomas COOPER, president, University of South Carolina, 1830.

A familiar face was missing from the Fightin’ Black Cat home football game Friday night. Ken WIGINTON, father of Coach Lee WIGINTON, missed seeing the win over Robinson. Ken was at Ballinger, attending the 50th-year anniversary of his graduating class. We missed the elder “Coach Wig,” who usually comes up to the pressbox for a visit. His wife Lou normally sits in the stands. Lookin’ forward to seeing ‘em at Lorena this Friday night...

The Mexia football field has been in “not-the-best-of-conditon” all season long. It’s even “moreso” right now. I’m hopeful the school board will address the bad situation, after the season ends...

This particular testing was primarily for the family of Peter and Victor LUNA. Leukemia has struck the family, and bone marrow will be needed...

Friday morning two flocks of geese, “in perfect formations,” flew over Mexia. Going southward, of course. Got that report from wife Peggy. Since then, at least two more folks have seen geese over Mexia skies...which I’ve always taken it to mean a fine harbinger that winter’s on the way...

Jodi GREENWOOD, local Realtor, you’ll recall had Marland Real Estate. Jodi’s now with Legacy Land & Ranches, based in Waco...

AT the game with LaVega here, a former Mexia football coach, Paul HURST, was in attendance, sitting with assistant Superintendent John TURPIN. This past week - the Robinson game - retired head Waco High football coach, Johnny TUSA, was in the pressbox, a commentator on the Robinson braodcast team. Enjoyed seeing Coach Tusa, whom I had visited with twice previously - at the Texas Coaching School and at the banquet held at the Ferrell Center at Baylor U. before this past Summer’s All-Star high school football game...

In conclusion, proud to be an Old Geezer - It’s the Old Geezers who know our great country is protected, not by politicians, but by, the young men and women in the military serving their country...
