EXODUS 11:10 - And Moses and Aaron did all these wonders before Pharaoh: and the Lord hardened Pharaoh’s heart, so that he would not let the children of Israel go out of his land.

FIRST AMENDMENT QUOTE: “With a free press, societies have an opportunity for the vigorous public debate that can help them solve their problems through peace, not conflict” - Ann K. COOPER, broadcast director, Columbia University School of Journalism, 2004.

A final reminder to roll back your timepieces an hour, before retiring this evening. Set ‘em back one hour, and you’ll be right on time for church services Sunday morning...

Soggy, muddy, torn up...you name it and it will describe Black Cat Field this season. Playing conditions for some games were less than palatable. Between now and next football season, I’d hope folks will seriously consider going the artificial turf route. Most all have gone to the artificial turf. It’s really not fair to football programs on the upswing to play with field conditions like we’ve had. The school board, I’m sure, will address this issue once the season is concluded... —-
Before the Saturday luncheon we attended last week on the Blinn College campus in Brenham, we talked with Brad FRAN CHIONE, the Blinn head football coach. He is the son of former Aggie coach Dennis FRAN CHIONE. Also got in a visit with Gus MUTSCHER, former state legislator and county judge of Washington County. Mutscher, who was Speaker of the House of Representatives from 1969 to 1972, is a big booster and backer of Blinn College. The Buccaneers are rated as the No. 1 junior college football team in the nation and play our very own Navarro Bulldogs this afternoon at Corsicana’s Tiger Field. The ‘Dogs are the No. 2 team, so it appears there might be a shootout to remember today...

The Mexia News has been thinking about the Veterans Day section, scheduled as a part of this newspaper on Tuesday, November 10. Veterans Day is November 11. I’m planning for the main feature, which will be about World War II hero Buck SLAUGHTER, still living in Mexia. Buck is a double Purple Heart recipient, with whom I’m looking forward to visiting. Thanks to Bob CRIDER for making us aware, although I’ve always read about Buck SLAUGHTER. Also, Crider has sent us a complete list of WW II veterans, so far as has been determined. That list will also be a part of the November 10 edition...

World War II veterans are known as “The Greatest Generation.” Europe marked the 70th anniversary last month of the start of World War II, 70 years ago, in Gdansk, Poland when shells were lobbed from a German battleship to ignite the war, which was the costliest in lives of any other war in history. It was also known as the 20th century’s bloodiest conflict. The blitzkrieg on Poland launched nearly six years of war that engulfed the world and left more than 50,000,000 people dead. Mexia and Limestone County lost a lot of young men in the war...
