Wary Mexia faces Wildcats

Mexia’s Fightin’ Black Cats are wary as they enter Friday night’s Bi-District encounter against the Palestine Wildcats at Cedar Hill’s Longhorn Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:30.
Palestine (6-4 record) is led in its offensive attack by junior quarterback Olin Terry, 5-9, 191, and who is a real speedster (4.5 in the 40). Palestine is capable of putting up some points, a factor which will provide a big test for the Mexia defense, which seems to be getting better against the rush. However, the passing game of opponents might pose some problems although the Fightin’ Cats have made pass defense one of the hallmarks of practices this week.
Terry and his running buddy, junior Terrance Simon, in the Palestine multiple offense, put up some impressive numbers against across-town  rival, the Westwood Panthers, last Friday night. Palestine roared past the Panthers 49-7 at Palestine Wildcat Stadium, clinching a playoff spot for the first time since Terry has been on the Varsity. “It is just a great feeling,” Terry said after throwing two touchdown passes and rushing for two more scores.
Against Westwood, Terry rushed a dozen times for 99 yards and hit seven of 10 passes for 94 yards. He was intercepted once. Decory Chivers, flanker/runner, rushed on nine occasions for 101 yards. Simon was the big gainer, however, running 13 times for 125 yards.
In the Fightin’ Cat camp, all hands are “on deck,” with an injury-free outlook to enter the state playoffs. Coach Lee Wiginton believes his club must turn in a top performance with containment to counteract Palestine’s speed merchants, particularly Terry and Simon.
Mexia enters the fray with an 8-2 mark and coming off a 4-1 District 19AAA journey.
Although Mexia is a slight favorite in this one, the local staff and players are under no illusions. The playoffs pose a “whole new season,” with a different atmosphere which prevails during the regular season.
