FIRST AMENDMENT QUOTE: “A good editorial cartoon flies in the face of everything we associate with as quality journalism. It is biased, it distorts, it generalizes and, in doing so, works on a visceral level like nothing else” - Rex BABIN, editorial cartoonist, The Sacramento (California) Bee, 2001.

One of the real good programs which come to Mexia High School is that of College Night, a grand opportunity for students and parents to learn more about the youngsters’ higher education options. This special event affords those attending to talk with representatives of colleges, universities, trade colleges and military branches, all geared to helping high school graduates in making decisions which will affect them for perhaps a lifetime. COLLEGE NIGHT will be Thursday evening around 6 o’clock. Students from other schools always are invited to attend, including high schoolers from Wortham, Groesbeck, Coolidge and Teague. Great opportunities, ya’all!!! College Night is always under sponsorship of the high school Counselors Office...

Mentioning the Counselors’ Office reminds me - that office needs old issues of graduation programs. The Counselors’ Office is attempting to compile and catalogue copies of past graduation programs, according to Peggy WRIGHT, Secretary to the Counselors. If you can assist these fine ladies, please leave the program with me at The Mexia News office, and I’ll forward ‘em to the north part of town...

YOUR CITY AT WORK DEPARTMENT: The City Council, working hard for you, continues to meet (the last meeting was Monday night of this week), to select a City Manager (CM) to succeed Carolyn MARTIN. The last meeting was again given over to interviewing and visiting with potential candidates. A couple of local folks - the Mayor, Troy MILLER, and Larry BROWN, already employed with the City of Mexia - have already been talked to - if the “talk about town” can be believed. Troy did apply for the CM position. I’m sure if this “ain’t so,” I’ll hear about it...

Watch it, folks. This thing might be another scam. A person, or persons, has or have been contacting merchants (and perhaps others) in efforts to solicit “donations for Black Cat playoff t-shirts).” So far as I know, this group, known as “N Communications,” is not “legit.” So, beware. If ya’ don’t know, contact Bobby FORREST or some other member of the Mexia Athletic Boosters Club, which pretty well has jurisdiction and gives the nod for various organizations when it pertains to Mexia High athletics...

So saddened to hear that longtime friend of the newspaper, John DUKE, is in Parkview Regional Hospital. I believe that John’s gonna’ be fine, and you can probably visit him in Room 104...

Good to see Galen REMMERS at the Teague Veterans Remembrance Park dedication ceremony on Veterans Day. “Hey, you crazy Mexia Republican,” Galen said in getting my attention from across the street. I proudly pled guilty to that monnicker. Galen now works at Mexia State School, and for awhile served in some liaison capacity on behalf of the state school and the Mexia Independent School District (ISD) during some of those tumultuous times when the lawsuit existed. Remmers had earlier departed ways with the Mexia ISD...
