As video highlights of the 2009 Mexia Fightin' Black Cat games unfolded on a big screen, a large crowd assembled at St. Mary's Parish Hall Saturday night for dinner, and for the awards program which followed, honoring the team at the annual football banquet.
Coaches presented awards to the Area Finalists, and a former Black Cat Shield of Honor winner, Frederick (Petey) Durham, was introduced as guest speaker. He praised and challenged the young men on the football teams to be "the best you can be," and reminded that "opportunities await you," while also reminding the gridders to "present yourselves in an upright manner." Durham, who has become to be a successful businessman in Dallas, owns a company which sets up stores such as Lowe's stores, Home Depots and Wal-Marts. He employs people from throughout the United States. Durham also reminded the young men to "represent your school and community well, and always look your best in the way you dress." Durham, who played quarterback here, is a Mexia High graduate of 1993.
