WORTHAM -- A decision last month by the Wortham Independent School District Board of Trustees has irked several local residents, who aired their frustrations Thursday when the board met in regular session.
At the heart of the issue is a $75,000 Texas Parks and Wildlife Department grant to establish a city park in town and an offer from the board to donate land for the park. Early in the discussion, the board offered to donate land for the park along Highway 14 near the schools.
The board later learned it is prohibited by state law from donating the land. The district advertised the land for sale by bid. The Wortham Economic Development Corporation made an offer on the approximately half acre of land between First United Methodist and Central Presbyterian churches near the center of town.
