Sad Scenario

Excuse me while I mount my high horse for a brief moment.

Something that has saddened me for quite some time was reinforced Monday night in Ennis.

We — as parents, brothers, sisters, cousins or whoever — are supposed to set an example for our young people. Show them how to win with class and lose with class.

That was not the case with the outlandish behavior exhibited after the basketball game in Ennis on Monday.

Grown men were behaving in ways that made me glad my 12 year-old son was not with me.

I understand the emotions involved in a game of that magnitude between fierce rivals, but cooler heads must prevail.

We cannot show our children, brothers, sisters, cousins and friends that behavior like that is the way you handle those situations.

You might expect that behavior from kids, but not grownups.

In fact, I found that most of the kids showed maturity and class in the situation — which is more than I can say for some adults.

In a game like that, there is a lot riding on it — many emotions bubble to the surface. For many of the kids on the losing team, it is the end of their basketball career and we should show them respect for what they’ve accomplished — fierce rival or not. We shouldn’t antagonize and incite the situations where emotions are already at a fevered pitch.

After all, this is about the kids.

We — as the role models that we are, like it or not — need to show better restraint and show the good sportsmanship that we preach to our children.

Let us learn from this so we can be better examples to our kids.
    With that, I digress.

March Madness

It’s almost here — Selection Sunday (and my birthday) March 14 followed by the opening round March 16.

It’s looking like No. 25 Texas is going to get in at around a No. 7 seed while No. 23 Texas A&M and No. 21 Baylor will grab a No. 6 seeding.

Three of the four No. 1 seeds have tentatively been determined — barring some huge upsets — with Kansas (28-2) in the Midwest region, Syracuse (28-2) in the South and Kentucky (28-2) in the East. In the West, Kansas St. looks to be in control for the final No. 1 seed.
Championship week will go a long way in determining how that all shakes out.

But, before the Big 12 Tournament kicks off on March 10, there are some huge games this weekend that may shake things up.

Baylor, Texas A&M and Missouri are all tied up with 10-5 conference records. Baylor will host Texas at 3 p.m. Saturday on ESPN while A&M travels to Oklahoma for an 11 a.m. tip-off on ESPN and Missouri faces No. 2 Kansas at 1 p.m. on CBS.

These are must-see games if you’re a Big 12 fan.

Free Agent moves

Free agency began yesterday in the NFL.

In one of the biggest moves so far, Chicago signed defensive end/outside linebacker Julius Peppers to a six-year deal. The agreement is reported to be for $40 million over the first three years.

Another big move came from Detroit. They signed former Titan Kyle Vanden Bosch to a four-year deal. Vanden Bosch, 31, will be due $10 million in the first year of the contract.

In a somewhat surprising move, the Carolina Panthers released seven-year quarterback Jake Delhomme after one of his worst years as the Panther signal caller. The release came two-days after the Panthers gave QB Matt Moore the highest restricted free-agent tender of $3.043 million for one season.

What that means is that Carolina has the chance to match any offer given to Moore and that, if traded, Carolina will receive 1st and 3rd-rounds picks next year

Delhomme’s 18 interceptions in 2009 and his 23 in his last 12 games last year effectively cost him his job.
