Letter: Group thankful for community support

To the Editor:
The Limestone Animal Rescue and Adoption Shelter, LARAS House, is a no kill animal shelter and adoption center based in Limestone County. The sad reality is more and more animals are being dumped on roadsides and in the rural areas of our county daily. Many of these animals, although healthy and happy, are good dogs and cats, and for whatever reason, will probably never be adopted. Currently all of our animals are housed with foster parents. As many know who have tried to surrender an animal or a litter of kittens recently, the few foster homes we have are full. The facility is desperately needed. As a no kill shelter, we believe keeping all of the dogs and cats in small kennels with just daily walks or small exercise yards is not in their best interest.
We have purchased five acres of land down the road from doctors Bennett and Holmes. We’ve put up perimeter fencing, gotten water and electricity to the land, now we’re in the planning stage for our permanent facility. It isn’t going to be the conventional one building facility where most of the animals aren’t going to be kept in cages and kennels. Our dream facility will consist of large yards for the large dogs, living in groups of three with shade shelters, trees, kiddie pools and their dog houses; a concrete kennel area for the small to medium dogs with large play yards where they can get plenty of exercise; an enclosed cattery. housing kittens as well as the adult cats with an outside enclosure where cats can enjoy the sunshine as well as have protection from predators and also be able to go indoors when the weather is extreme; adjoined, but separated from the cattery, will be an area for very small dogs and puppies; and an intake area where dogs and cats are received, treated and kept in quarantine until they are deemed healthy to join the regular population.
Currently we are in the process of raising funds for our capital building program. Phase 1 of our building program is the aerobic septic system, the large yards for the big dogs, the quarantine area and the concrete area for the medium/small dogs as well as trees and shade shelters. Our current building fund goal for the first phase is $75,000.
We raised $6000 on our last fundraising dinner, which was recently matched by an anonymous donor. It has been suggested we publicize our building fund campaign so that others might also donate. Another anonymous donor has graciously donated several thousand dollars to help us get started. Although these donors wish to remain totally anonymous, we would like to thank them publicly for their generosity. LARAS House is a 501 c 3 non profit organization. All donations are tax deductible.
