Mexia sales tax rebates continue monthly increases

State sales tax collections increased in March, and the City of Mexia continues to reflect those increases in amounts sent by Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts Susan Combs. She distributed $419 million to local government entities in the latest round of rebate checks emanating from the State of Texas.
March state sales tax revenue and April payments made to local governments represent sales which occurred in February. The state received $1.6 billion in sales tax revenue in March, up 7.4 percent compared to March of 2007.
The Lone Star State continues to amaze the nation. Case in point, as explained by Comptroller Combs, “Since the beginning of the fiscal year in September 2007, state sales tax collections have increased 7.2 percent compared to the same period in the previous fiscal year. Although the national economy is slowing, here in Texas, growth in sales tax collections remains consistent.” Combs sent $419 million in April sales tax allocations to cities, counties, transit systems and special purpose taxing districts, a 3.7 percent increase compared to April, 2007. So far this calendar year, sales tax allocations to local governments are up 6.4 percent.
Combs sent April sales tax allocations of $281 million to Texas cities, up 3.2 percent compared to April of one year ago. Calendar year-to-date, city sales tax allocations are running six percent higher than last year. Texas counties received sales tax payments ot $25.9 million, up 4.4. percent compared to one year ago. Calendar year-to-date, county sales tax allocations are 6.5 percent higher than last year.
The City of Mexia noted its April check of $205,250.53, an increase from $191,960.71 received in April of a year ago. Mexia is also up for year-to-date checks (starting in January), counting $891,969.04, compared with last year’s $851,496.16 - about to hit the one-million dollar mark. Of that total, the Mexia Economic Development Corporation receives one-quarter of the total.
The City of Groesbeck’s April check amounts to $44,341.63, an increase from last April’s $35,526.60. Groesbeck is also up in accumulative totals for the calendar year - $193,240.65, compared with last year’s $169,638.57.
The City of Kosse April check totals $4,089.28, representing a whopping 96.86 percent increase over the $2,077.15 check last April. Kosse almost doubled in an increase for year-to-date - $18,177.82, compared with a year ago when the checks totaled $9,437.42.
The City of Coolidge received $1,200.66 last month, up from the $850.60 last April. Coolidge also shows an increae on year-to-date - $6,293.95 from Year 2007’s $5,035.87.
The City of Thornton also increases to $1,081.68 from last April’s check of $581.87, but records only a slight increase for year-to-date - $4,544.42, compared with a year ago’s $4,500.73.

In Freestone County, the City of Fairfield April check amounts to $167,745.59, representing a 234.93 percent increase over April of a year ago when the check was for $50,083.13. Fairfield is up on accumulative totals for the calendar year, showing $711,030.49, compared with last year’s four-month total of $633,976.29.
The City of Teague check in April was for $33,943.72, a drop from $34,230.30 received last April. However, Teague is up for year-to-date - $161,430.38, compared with a year ago’s $139,465.68.
The City of Wortham counts $5,696.92 in its current check, compared with $4,788.39 last April. Wortham shows a slight increase on year-to-date checks - $35,831.11, compared with last year’s totals of $35,420.51.
