Harrison, Johnson win in ISD election
By Bob Wright-Editor
Bert Harrison won re-election to the Place 5 trustee position, a result from Saturday’s school board election.
Votes were cast by some 500 patrons of the Mexia Independent School District (ISD), at the Mexia Civic Center.
Harrison received 282 votes to 192 votes for challenger Stephana High.
Winning a seat on the board for the first time is Brian Johnson, who had little trouble in his race. Johnson was recipient of 349 votes. His challenger was Gordon Lee, who formerly served on the board. Lee got 129 votes.
Johnson and Harrison will receive their oaths of office at the regularly-scheduled School Board meeting Monday night, May 19, at 6 o’clock. At that time, the board will undergo re-organization, as Harrison will continue in Place 5, while Johnson will be seated into Place 4. Roxianne Schuster, who has held that position, chose not to seek re-election.
Johnson, the newcomer to the board, will join the “old cast” of Don Corbitt, Kelly Lauderdale, Harrison, Steve Trantham, Culetta Beachum and Larry LaRue.
A new Superintendent for the Mexia ISD is not due to be named until the new board begins its work. According to the timeline, the district’s top administrator might not come until sometime in June.
