LARAS’ House Meets Today, In City Parks July 4th

By BYRON (PUTT) RIDDLE - Special to The News

The Limestone Animal Rescue Adoption Shelter, Inc. is meeting tonight at the Hamilton House at 108 N. Canton in Mexia at 6:00 p.m. Plans will be finalized for the display booths going into Hughes City Park and Groesbeck City Park for the festivities Friday July 4th. LARAS’ House will be in both locations with information brochures , membership forms, tee shirts, raffle tickets, donation jars and animals to show for adoption. The booth in Hughes Park will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. In Groesbeck, it will be open from 11:00 a.m. until nearly dark just before the fireworks display begins. In Kosse, an information table will be set up in the park there from 6:00 p.m. until just before the fireworks display.

Everyone interested in resolving the abandoned animal problem in Limestone County is invited to the meeting tomorrow night. Tee shirts will be available there for purchase. Any not sold will be divided between the booths in Groesbeck and Mexia to be sold from those locations. The raffle tickets are for a minimum of two quilts that LARAS’ House will give the winners.

Meantime, the appeal for people who can help with fostering animals and provide other services for them is still on in full force. President Jay Posey says, “We need more people than ever to fill these vital and much needed volunteer slots. Now that we are becoming known in the county as the go to place for abandoned animals, we are getting inundated with daily phone calls to place animals that have been abandoned at someone’s property. On Monday alone, there were five calls about a total of 46 different animals that needed homes. We hope a lot of people will step up and foster animals, join LARAS’ House and buy tee shirts and raffle tickets.”

Next month, Limestone Animal Rescue Adoption Shelter is having a “Spayghetti Dinner” to raise funds for spaying and neutering animals. Plans for the dinner location, date, time and cost are being made at tonight’s meeting and the follow-up meeting July 16th. LARAS’ House is seeking sponsors for the dinner who can help cover the costs of spaying and neutering so many of theses animals that if left unaltered just reproduce profusely. Contact the shelter at 254-562-2005 to offer your services or sponsorships for any of these needs.
