Dee L. Whorton
Funeral services for Dee L. Whorton were conducted Wednesday morning, April 23, 2008, at 10 o’clock in Mount Calvary Baptist Church in San Antonio. Officiating was the Rev. C. Victor Herbin, Jr., pastor.
Mr. Whorton was born December 18, 1930, in Mexia to Dee whorton and Elvira Elkridge Whorton Hawkins. After graduating from Dunbar High School in Mexia, Dee enlisted in the United States Navy. Upon completing his enlistment, he enrolled in Prairie View A&M University.
He decided to re-enlist in the Military, this time opting for the United States Air Force. He again returned to Prairie View A&M, graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Education. He later earned a Master’s degree in Education.
D.L. married his wife of 46 years, Helen Ruth Demus, on June 25, 1961. They raised a family of two boys, Michael (wife Juanita) and Dwight (wife Sharonda). They have resided in their home for 44 years and can certainly be considered pillars of the community.
D.L. was a committed and dedicated educator. He began his career as a shop teacher in the San Antonio Independent School District at old Wheatley High School. He completed his educational administration certification and worked his way to the position of Principal, serving in that capacity at King and Poe middle schools before retiring.
Mr. Whorton joined Mount Calvary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Pastor, C.M. Graham, and served under the present pastor, C.V. Herbin. He was a faithful, devoted member of Mount Calvary for many years. He was a cheerful giver, and an avid giver to the building fund, Men and Women’s Day, and all other special days and events.
When called upon, he enthusiastically volunteered with his talents, wisdom and time. He skillfully made props for the children’s programs, worked in the finance office. During renovations, he stayed and “locked up” in the afternoons.
He remained enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, earning the rank of Master Sergeant. D.L. retired from the Military after 29 years of active and enlisted service.
D.L. Whorton is survived by his wife, two sons, two daughters-in-law, five grandsons - Michael, Jr., Kedrion, Malcolm, Marcel and Daniel; two brothers, three sisters, and a host of relatives and friends.
