Obituaries for 05-13

Shirley Ann Carroll

Funeral services for Mrs. Shirley Ann Carroll, 67, will be held on Wednesday, May 14, 2008, at 10 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Teague. Interment will follow the services at Woodland Cemetery near Kirvin. Brother Gary House will officiate. Visitation will be held this evening (Tuesday) with the family present from 6 until 8 o’clock at Bowers Funeral Home.

Mrs. Carroll passed away on Saturday, May 10, 2008, at her residence in Teague after an eleven month long battle with cancer. She was born to Dutch Lee and Wynola May Whitt in Honey Grove on April 9, 1941. She grew up in Dallas and was especially close with her parents and siblings. She married W.C. “Monkey” Carroll on February 18, 1959, and shared over forty-nine years together as residents of Teague.

Mrs. Carroll was employed at various jobs in her life, including working at J’s Drive-in and for Daps convenience store. However, she was best known for her elaborate Christmas decorations, she lighted up on her house and yard every season. Mrs. Carroll was a member of Eighth Avenue Baptist Church.

She is survived by her husband, W.C. “Monkey” Carroll of Teague; two daughters, Debbie Cox & husband Dennis of Teague and Judy Angel & husband David of Dew; one son, Allan Carroll & wife Cyndy of Teague; 13 grandchildren, Randon Foley & wife Amber, Bradly Cox & wife Jenniffer, Tiea Cowley & husband David, Johnna Boylan & husband Pat, Jeremy Cox, Trent Cox, Allana Angel, Keith Carroll, Ashley Angel, Crystal Carroll, Dylan Angel, Devin Angel, and Dustin Angel; seven great-grandchildren, Chelsea Cowley, Cameron Angel-Foley, B.J. Cox, Karsyn Bowden, Skyler Foley, Kailee Foley, and Chase Cox; three sisters, Ruby Miller of Kemp, Melba Rich of Gordonville, & Patricia Cruise of Bogota; two brothers, Jimmy Whitt of Seagoville and Robert Whitt of Arp; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Mrs. Carroll was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Earnest Whitt and Jesse Whitt.

Norman K. Watson

Funeral services for Mr. Norman K. Watson were held on Monday,May 12, 2008, at 1 p.m. at Bowers Funeral Home in Teague. Interment followed the services at Greenwood Cemetery. Brother Jimmy Petty officiated. Visitation was held on Sunday with the family present from 6 until 8 o’clock at the funeral home.

Mr. Watson passed away on Saturday, May 10, 2008, at his residence near Kirvin. He was born to Basil Kinner and Ruby Long Watson on April 6, 1928, in San Antonio. He served in U.S. Army just after WWII in Japan.

Mr. Watson was an Engineer for Burlington Northern-Rock Island Railroad in Teague for many years until his retirement. He had lived in the Teague area for over 66 years. He loved his kids and grandkids very much and was a true family man.

He is survived by his wife of over twenty-two years, Elsie Watson of Kirvin; two sons, Norman Patrick Watson of Kirvin and William Brady Watson of Corsicana; his grandchildren that he raised as his children, Catherine Ann Watson of Wortham, Christina Nan Watson & fiance’ Randy Grimes of Teague, Micca Patrece Watson of Teague, and Matthew Joseph Kenner Watson & wife Jennifer of Wortham; seven great-grandchildren, Eden Richardson, Libby Watson, Abbie Adcock, Shalee Watson, Kenner Rope Watson, Kennedy Watson, and Triston Anderton; one brother, David Watson & wife Pat of Village Mills; one sister, Elouise Watson York & husband Bradford of Teague; numerous other relatives and friends.

Mr. Watson was preceded in death by his parents and his daughter, Becky Jane Watson.

Johnny E. Franklin

Johnny E. Franklin, 71, of Mount Calm, died at a Waco hospital on Friday, May 9, 2008. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 14, 2008, at Mexia City Cemetery with Cameron Simmons officiating.

He was born September 16, 1936, in Paris, Texas, the son of Christine Lee Franklin and Fred Franklin. After attending elementary school at Forest Glade, he graduated from Mexia High School in 1955 and attended Texas A&M, where he was a member of the famed Aggie marching band. One of his most memorable experiences with the Fightin’ Texas Aggie Band was the 1956 train trip to Los Angeles to participate in the A&M-UCLA football game.

He graduated from East Texas State University, now Texas A&M-Commerce, with a degree in business administration. While there he was a member of Delta Sigma Phi fraternity. He served in the United States Air Force, stationed in Phoenix, Arizona, and returned to Texas to take a position with the Mercantile National Bank at Dallas.

After several years in the banking business, he moved to Mount Calm where he engaged in the cattle business. Following his retirement, he enjoyed traveling, visiting all the continents and nearly every state.

He married his high school sweetheart, Nancy Ann Dillard, in Mexia in 1961. They became the parents of two daughters.

Johnny served on the Board of Directors of the First State Bank of Mount Calm, as well as on the board of Birome Water Supply Corporation for several terms, which included serving as president of that organization.

He was preceded in death by his father.

He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Kathleen Franklin of Mount Calm, and Elizabeth Simmons and her husband Cameron of League City; two grandsons, Jacob and Benjamin Simmons of League City; his mother, Christine Franklin of Mexia; and a brother-in-law, Hughes Dillard of Mexia.

Memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
