Owen ‘Rusty’ Beene Jr.

Funeral services for Owen “Rusty” Beene Jr., 66, were held on Sunday, April 7, at 2 p.m. at Bowers Funeral Home in Teague. Visitation was held prior to the service. The Rev. Richard Gillet officiated. Interment followed at Salem Cemetery near Freestone with Masonic Graveside Rites.

Mr. Beene passed away on Wednesday, April 3, 2024, at his residence near Freestone.

He was born Jan. 5, 1958, in Mexia and was a lifelong resident of Freestone County. Rusty worked as an auto mechanic for many years, but he also enjoyed building guns and working on all kinds of firearms. He also built furniture and knives. Mr. Beene loved to go fishing and visit with people. He especially enjoyed drinking coffee every Sunday morning in his shop with his friends.

He is survived by his wife of more than 25 years, Vickie Beene; six children, Amy Beene and husband Jesse, Cher’ee Wilcoxen and husband Joey, Vantley Kelley and Christy, Linda Mullins and Tyler, Tanya Bosley and husband Allen, and Carrie Jo Ogilvie and husband Whit; numerous grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one nephew, Jonathan Beene and wife Ashley; one niece, Patricia Norman and husband Ricky; other relatives and friends including special friends, Jack and Louann Hale, and Don Jackson.

Mr. Beene was preceded in death by his mother and stepfather, Betty Pingleton and Billy Mears; his father, Owen “Sonny” Beene Sr.; one brother, Ronnie Beene; his grandmother, Virgie Pingleton; and one stepson, Gary Kelley.
