Will this weekend’s UIL State Track Meet mark a first for Mexia when the boys 4 x 100 Relay team steps foot on the track at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the University of Texas campus in Austin May 10-11?
Blackcat coaches can’t ever recall when or if Mexia has ever had a boys team participate in the relay events at the state level.
“Some say they did,” said Mexia Athletic Director Lamonte Chambers. “Others say they didn’t, or that they can’t recall. I know our girls teams have ran in the state relays in the past … many times, but no one seems to know if the boys have or not.”
After doing some research in the UIL archives, back in 1947-48, when Mexia was classified as 1A the boys won the old 440 Yard Relay event at state with a time of 44.0 flat. According to the archives, the 400 Yard Relay was converted to the 400 Meter Relay in 1978.
This year, the Blackcats 4 x 100 Meter Relay team of Arik Weathers, Tyler Porter, Keandric Mack and Broderick Reeves boasts the second best time in the state heading into this weekend’s final meet of the year.
Coach Frankie Smith has been preparing the group over the last two weeks, going through some light workouts early on.
