County to hear progress on getting ICE inmates

Limestone County Commissioners will hear a report at Monday’s commissioners court meeting from County Judge Daniel Burkeen on progress at filling the Limestone County Detention Center with new inmates from the San Antonio division of Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
ICE inmates were to have begun filling 500 of the 1,000 beds in the county’s private prison earlier this week after the Bureau of Prisons had moved most of its inmates to other facilities.
Burkeen may have an update on whether Dallas ICE has gotten approval to begin using the other 500 beds of the LCDC, something they had expressed interest in when they toured the facility in April.
The 30-day requirement before an prison management company may be chosen is still running, and though the county has not yet received any bids, they are expected to arrive before the May 24 deadline.
