Mexia ISD board president Brown resigns

Mexia ISD trustees will swear in re-elected board members when they meet Monday night, with one exception: board president Lon Brown.
Brown announced during the board’s May 13 special meeting to name a lone finalist for superintendent that he was resigning his position, effective immediately.
“This will be my last board meeting,” Brown said that night, adding his work more and more takes him away from home overnight. “I’m resigning today for personal and professional reasons. … I just don’t have the time to do all that needs to be done.”
Brown was just re-elected Saturday with no opponent. Also returning to the board are Place 3 incumbent Culetta Beachum, who had no opponent, and Place 2 incumbent Cheryl Cockrell, who defeated challenger Shelly Hullum 170-138.
The district has two ways to fill Brown’s spot: call another election, or appoint someone to fill the spot until next May’s school trustee election. The cost of a new election is about $7,000, so it’s expected the board will appoint a replacement for Brown.
