Hoopers go 3-3 at Great American

The Mexia Hoopers, next year’s varsity-eligible boys basketball team, played in the National Great American Shootout in Duncanville last week and won three out of six games.

In game one of pool play Thursday, the team played Houston 5A Pearland, and Mexia lost 63-60. Mexia led in the game several times, but trailed in the end. In game two Friday morning, the team played D1 Ambassadors from Austin and beat them, 84-51. In game three of pool play Friday evening, the team played big West Texas Zags (a mixture of Lubbock High School’s 5A best players and Seminole High School’s best players), and the team beat Mexia, 67-57. The Zags team had three players 6 foot, 6 inches tall and 240 pounds, and two more at 6 foot 5 inches tall. Mexia tallest player is 6 foot 4 inches tall. Mexia played hard and stayed within 6 to 10 points the entire game, but just could not catch up.

Mexia’s was the only school whose team was made up of players only from their school, which impressed some of the other teams.
