A woman driving on U.S. 84 in Mexia late Tuesday night fell asleep and drove her Toyota Camry car off the road, damaging her car. Fortunately, neither she nor her passenger – her 2-year-old child – were injured.

First responders were called to the scene about 11:20 p.m. and found Jewel Charlene Turnham, 27, of Mexia, and the child in the wrecked car in the parking lot of a resale shop in the 1300 block of East Milam Street. Turnham had been driving eastbound on U.S. 84, which is called Milam Street as it passes through Mexia, and told police she fell asleep.

According to the police report, after Turnham’s car left the roadway, it hit a culvert with its front left wheel, seding the vehicle airborne. When it hit the ground again, the car’s undercarriage was damaged. Turnham was cited for failure to control speed.
